Lightning Strikes
Most folks know that hiding under a tree in a lightning storm is a big mistake. But what about taking shelter in your car or truck? Do the rubber tires create safe insulation as many people claim, or will the steel frame attract lightning and increase your risk?
Here’s the answer: If you’re caught in adverse conditions, a vehicle can be a good place to hide. The metal frame will conduct electricity, but it will do so around and away from you. The concept is known as a Faraday Cage, but it will only work if you avoid touching anything connected to your car’s exterior – even a door handle or steering wheel. It’s unlikely that your vehicle will be hit, unless you’re stopped in a desolate field. Nonetheless, always try to drive to a spot where there is more cover, such as under a highway overpass. If it does seem likely that you could be a lightning target, also remember to turn off your car’s electrical systems. This can help protect them and makes your car less of a polarized target.
